I had raised my cat, Archie, from a kitten, and he had learned to sit on
the couch with his paws folded and listen to me practice the flute. Of
course, cats don't applaud.
But when I switched to the oboe, I once left the room with my oboe
sitting on its peg. In a scurrilous guerrilla action, Archie attacked
the oboe, knocked it over and bent the octave key.
I told this sad tale to Jane Taylor, my quintet coach, and she
commented, "Everybody's a critic!"
