Dear Anthea,
I hope you'll vigorously promote chamber music from your new position.
Orchestras are rapidly disappearing as an alternative for amateur
musicians in the New York Metropolitan area.
Currently, the Bergin Symphony (NJ) and the Centre Symphony (Citicorp
Center) are going out of business.
The BMCC Symphony (Borough of Manhattan Community College) is still in
business thanks to a precarious budget allocation, but they have only
one cello and only two good violins.
I think chamber music has always offered more musical excitement than
any other form of music. Bands seem to be high school phenomenons and,
now, orchestras are virtually nonexistent, so ...
Sara (wife) says that the only reason that no one introduced us high
school band members to chamber music was because it can't be delivered
as a mass-education program to hordes of public school children--i.e.
school systems consider chamber music to be an uneconomical, inefficient
way to teach music to large numbers of children.
So, that leaves you, Anthea, as the last hope for sophisticated, adult,
musical education in New York City.
Congratulations. You have my whole-hearted support.
