The mention of John Corigliano reminds me of a funny
story. We were doing a piece by him - must have been
an overture of some sort because it was the first
thing on the program.
It had two sets of timpani - one on each side of the
stage. We started the piece - the oboes had a few
measures rest at the beginning - and the floor started
shaking. I thought "wow the timpani are really
getting into this piece" - then I realized that the
timpani weren't playing yet. So my next thought was
the boiler blew up - we were in a very old theater.
My next thought was an earthquake (we're in Reading PA
so we're not used to feeling that!) People in the
balcony started leaving because I heard that the
balcony was swaying. We stopped the music and when
things quieted down, we began again. The next week the
structural engineers came in to check the theater and
our huge lovely chandelier (think Phantom of the
Opera) has disappeared never to appear again even the
theater has been rehabbed beautifully since then.
