Dear List:

With this post, I may very well be heralding the end of my own career, in
total. But as I will not object to this thread coming to an end. Let's be
clear on a few things.

I wanted to make every effort to conceal, publicly, that the person who left
is Jon Dlouhy. I fully understand that seeing "his old job" discussed here
might be uncomfortable to him. Few people other than Mr. Dlouhy are more
unhappy to see him leave the ASO than am I. I would never intentionally
offend him, or at least I wouldn't have.

Whether it offends him or not, whether it causes the entire double-reed
world to turn against me, I have to vent.

Jon Dlouhy is one of the finest players in the US, if not the world. Yet, in
the time of *record* turnover in US orchestras' 1st oboe positions, he was
unable to find another job.

I am unable to tell you just *how* many people I've run into who have felt
either true, profound hate for the man or who have been really scared of
him. I've heard people warn me about him, I've known of major teachers to
warn their students not to audition for work near him or with him. I have
been told of one member of a rather major orchestra's oboe section who'd
have rather die than allow him anywhere near them.

In spite of all I've heard, I have made up my own mind. He's always been
good to me, very nice to me until recently. I've now been treated by him as
though I have done something terribly awful to somebody who's been a perfect
angel all of their life. I do not claim to be universally liked, but I'm not
sure there's another person in the US double-reed world who is as thoroughly
disliked as is JD.

Just a thought ... Could you be uncomfortable because you made the choice to
work with this person? Because you're a political pawn?

Sorry, I'm just done walking in this "straight jacket," feeling as if I have
to tiptoe around the subject, trying to avoid offending somebody who, by
many accounts, has spent little time considering *anybody's* feelings but
his, even if I were one of the ones he'd tried to consider.

Otherwise respectfully,

Kevin H. Moore
