That sounds to me, Geoff, as though the orchestras in your country
approach the people they are interested. Am I wrong? Have I
misunderstood? In this country, vacancies are publicized and players
submit letters, expressing their interest in auditioning for the
job. They might be accepted to the auditions straightaway or asked
to submit audio tapes for further consideration. This helps the
orchestras in narrowing down the numbers of people showing up for the
audition. There are several rounds, then, of auditions:
Preliminaries
Semi-finals
Finals
Those in the Finals might be asked to spend a week rehearsing and
performing with the orchestra before a decision is made. That seems
to be the US way, in its simplest form.
