Rumor has it that Paul McCandless (?) had a hole drilled in the body of
his instrument and a microphone permanently installed.

Although that permits total freedom of movement, its not something
I'm willing to do to *my* oboe, and would be a little surprised
if you were willing to do that for the sake of one performance.

if you were willing to somewhat limit your range of motion and use
one or two nearby microphones, you might ask if they have access
to or willing to rent the Danish Pro-Audio 4011 or 4012 microphone.
Though quite pricey ($1800) they're the best directional microphone
I've ever heard used for recording or amplifying oboe.

(They're not *that* exotic).

www.dpamicrophones.com has suggestions about placement.

If only using one, "looking down on the keys" and if using two,
both "looking down on the keys" and "looking up the bell".
