Dear Barbara and list,
The letter to the TSA from the Musicians' Union can be helpful in getting
your instrument on the airplane. However, it is up to each indivicual airline to
determine whether or not they will allow your instrument on board. That was
directly from the employees and pilot of a United airlines flight I was on in
Hawaii. Delta Airlines is the worst offender for not allowing you on with
your instrument and many articles have been written about them in our Local 47
newspaper.
I had a situation with Delta Airlines where the woman taking the tickets to
board ran after one of the saxophone players onto the plane, since she saw that
this woman wasn't letting us on with our horns and we had to gate check them.
She got in the other line and got on. This Delta employee saw this and ran
after her onto the plane and began screaming at her in front of all the
passengers! It was so unprofessional and unbelievable!!!! America West can also be
pretty hit or miss with their policies and treatment of musicians. Best
advice is to have your letter with you but be prepared to "sweet talk" your way
on. It's helped me many times.........
Best wishes,
Jennifer Hall :-)
