Dear Alex and Ed,

After searching the condo and the papers I had with me on my trip, I
realized that SOME of them are still with my husband and his violin who
are both in France.

What I have here was given to me by an amateur violinist from the west
coast . It is a copy of a letter from the Department of Transportation
(signed by T homas R. Blank, Assistant Administrator for Security
Rgulation and Policy) to Thomas Lee the president of the Musicians
Union.. The body of the letter states that as of 12/20/2002, aircraft
operators were "to allow musical instruments as carry-on baggage in
addition to the limit of one bag and one personal item per person as
carry-on baggage on an aircraft." It does not limit this to AF of M
members as I read it. If a musician has problems "at the security
screening point, he/she should request to speak to a screening
supervisor for resolution."

As I mentioned before, flying Vienna to Amsterdam to Memphis to
Greensboro, I had no problem and never had occasion to show the letter.

I'll send more info when my husband gets home and I can see the papers
he has which are different.

Thanks for your patience!
