=09=09=09=09 =09=09=09=09=09Dear IDRS Members,=20
=09=09=09=09=09At our July 24, 2006 Executive Committee meeting, we discus=
sed ways to improve the IDRS on-line experience for our members. I am happ=
y to announce the changes which will be going into effect on August 15, 200=
6.=20
=09=09=09=09=09These changes are evidence of the health of the Society, wh=
ich continues to grow and prosper. Along with this growth, IDRS OnLine memb=
ership continues to increase. Due to the number of subscribers to IDRS OnLi=
ne, which currently is 1820, and the anticipated future increase of subscri=
ptions, the society has determined that the web-based bulletin board system=
, IDRS Forum, would better serve the needs of its members.=20
=09=09=09=09=09The committee has made the decision to begin migration of t=
he IDRS List-serve to the IDRS Forum. I encourage you all to begin familiar=
izing yourself with the many features of the IDRS Forum between now and the=
end of the summer months. I am certain that you will find the added featu=
res, such as topic/specific organization, and archival and search features =
quite appealing.=20
=09=09=09=09=09The IDRS Forum has all of the functions of the list and mor=
e. The primary difference between the two formats, list serve (IDRS OnLine)=
and bulletin board (IDRS Forum), is the method by which messages are proce=
ssed. When messages are sent to IDRS OnLine, they are copied and sent to ev=
ery subscriber to the list. When messages are sent to the bulletin board, t=
hey are kept in a central server, and members go to the server to read them=
. For example, on August 1, members posted a total of 19 messages. IDRS OnL=
ine sent these 19 messages to 1820 subscribers for a total of 34,580 messag=
es. Every subscriber must filter through all 19 messages and decide to read=
/respond/delete them. Using the Forum format, a total of 19 messages are se=
nt to the Forum. Messages sent to the Forum are organized into various topi=
cs. New messages are dated, and the Forum server remembers and identifies e=
ach message as read/unread for every subscriber. Members select/read these =
messages via the Forum
web browser at their leisure.=20
=09=09=09=09=09 The benefits of this migration to the Forum are as follows=
:=20
=09=09=09=09=09It will virtually eliminate the daily email for the IDRS me=
mbership. As the size of our organization and its List-serve membership ha=
s grown, many members have become increasingly unhappy with the amount of e=
mail received each day. It will increase the on-line traffic on the Forum,=
which will benefit our double-reed merchants and exhibitors. One differen=
ce between the IDRS List-serve and IDRS Forum is the possibility for commer=
cial postings and advertisements on the Forum (long prohibited on the List-=
serve). The advertisements may include graphics and direct links to their w=
eb sites. The Forum allows access to messages from all members. Currently =
many IDRS members are unable to receive the IDRS List-serve because their E=
mail providers may identify the IDRS List as a source of spam, and may bloc=
k messages from the list. This is often due to the size of the file being s=
ent, another sign that our desire for discussion and communication has outg=
rown the capacity of
many email servers. The Forum has many exciting features that are unmatche=
d on the List-serve. For example, the Forum allows for subscriptions. Mem=
bers can choose to receive email notification when a subject of interest (i=
.e. oboe, bassoon, vibrato, etc) is discussed on the Forum. The Forum will=
also be archived, so that members can search for a specific topic at their=
convenience. Members can edit their own postings after they have been sen=
t. Also, messages sent to the Forum are kept in a database, which is archiv=
ed and searchable by keywords. Members will not need to set a vacation pref=
erence when they will be away from their email, or when they would prefer t=
o not receive IDRS list discussion. All members can choose to access the F=
orum at their convenience, as frequently or infrequently as they=E2=80=99d =
like. The younger members of our organization prefer this type of communica=
tion, as they are often members of many on-line Forums. This will be a mor=
e
=E2=80=98user-friendly=E2=80=99 way to accommodate and include our younger=
membership in on-line discussions. =09=09=09=09=09For those of you who ar=
e unfamiliar with the Forum, I encourage you to begin accessing it immediat=
ely. A follow-up email will be be sent shortly outlining the specifics of t=
he Forum and registration procedures.=20
=09=09=09=09=09The IDRS Listserve as we have come to know it will continue=
to exist in a =E2=80=98read-only=E2=80=99 format. IDRS officers will be a=
ble to post and send important messages regarding our Society for all to re=
ad. The general discussion between our members, however, will be moved to =
the Forum.=20
=09=09=09=09=09I=E2=80=99m sure there will be some growing pains as this m=
igration begins and I encourage everyone to be patient as these changes tak=
e effect. In the long run, the possibilities for our membership will be gr=
eatly enhanced and very beneficial to our Society.=20
=09=09=09=09=09Additional information about the use of the Forum is availa=
ble on IDRS WWW at:=20
