During the course of a particularly troubled rehearsal, Herbert Beerbohm
Tree directed a certain young actor to take a step back. The man agreed.

Some time later, Tree stopped the rehearsal again. "A little further back,
please," he directed. Again the actor complied and the rehearsal continued.

Finally, Tree stopped again... "Further back still," he ordered. "But if I
go any further back, I'll be right off the stage," the actor protested. "Yes,"
Tree replied, "that's right!"

half-brother of Sir Max Beerbohm [noted for his Shakespearean roles]
