As a prescribing dentist, I never heard from patient about the "diminished
taste" sensation. Many complained about the taste of CHX, and some mentioned
that it ruined a taste for wine or beer for a few hours, but most of them
use it at night and don't drink in bed.
If you merely dip a reed in the stuff, I can't see how it would be in a
quantity large enough to alter your taste.
As far as I know, it is still by prescription. If you tell your dentist why
you want it, he should be happy to give you the necessary scrap of paper. He
might even sell you a bottle at his somewhat lower price. You can get
Hibiclens OTC, and it is the same chemical, but needs dilution. It tastes
even worse than Peridex or other similar rinses, but is intended as a hand
scrub.
