Jim,
You may not know I was exiled by Ishikawa for insulting him when I warned
Jon Dlouhy that censorship was indeed a concern on the list. Because I
replied to Ishikawa's pernicious ruling by suggesting that he was more than
a little "up-tight", he had Nancy A King unsubscribe me permanently. I am
pursuing the issue with the University that hosts the list. Have you ever
met this guy? No one seems to like him.
Peridex (CHX) is probably best used in an undiluted form. That can get
expensive. Your dentists concern about staining can be explained away by the
chemistry of its staining.
CHX binds to the proteins of dental plaque or pellicle, thereby increasing
its "bioavailability" or the longevity of its effectiveness. While so bound,
it also "fixes" iron salts from the saliva into those proteins, possibly
causing a light stain on the teeth with repeated use. It polishes off
easily, but in some people it can look dark, with a trace of orange (rust)
color (with repeated use). That is not going to happen on a reed, and if it
did after repeated use, it is not very noticeable. I have not seen it. It's
much more acceptable than Herpes or some of the other nasty crud in the
world.
CHX does have an amazing kill potential, and it is not necessary to change
the stuff each time it is used. I fill a shot glass, and I change it once a
week. I only have a couple of students. If your bottle is the usual 16oz you
can see the cost for each shot glass. I usually dilute it 50%, figuring
there is no saliva to dilute it. A less costly source is Hibiclens, a CHX
liquid soap for hand washing. It is less expensive, and much more
concentrated. You can use it by diluting to the same strength as Peridex
with water. No flavoring is added, so it has its own peculiar taste, but
before we had Peridex, many of us suggested that our patients use it as a
rinse to clean up after minor periodontal procedures, or if they had ANUG
("trench mouth"). It is tolerable as a rinse, so it is not too bad as a reed
dip.
The cheapest way is to dilute Clorox 1:10 with water. That dilution will
kill all viruses on contact, so you do not need to soak a reed. That way you
avoid the cellulose-dissolving effect of the stuff. It just doesn't taste
very good, but rinses easily in water. This is also good stuff to flush
bocals.
I hope this helps.
