The only ways I know to "sterilize" are in a pressurized steam autoclave or
in Ethylene oxide gas. Neither is practical for reeds. The kill spectrum of
Clorox is very broad, and so is that of Chlorhexidine. I prefer the taste of
Chlorhexidine, and I trust that I will not be exposed to anything that
survives and is really frightening unless there is patent blood on the reed.
That one is off limits. There are some pretty nasty bugs that can stand
drying out, and will reactivate when re-hydrated. What are the active
ingredients in this Sterisol stuff? Sani-Spray? If it is a quaternary
ammonium chloride, it requires immersion for a significant time and could
still be problematic in the presence of proteins. If it is peroxide or
alcohol, I'm not touching it.
