I've seen that used before, but don't know if I'd trust it in a reed sharing
situation. Better than nothing, for sure!
Listerine would sanitize a reed, but not sterilize it. Sanitizing being
reduction of germs, sterilizing being the elimination of most germs as
surgical instruments are for operating room use. I used to work in a
hospital where we prepped surgical instruments; they need to be (or used to
be) autoclaved for quite a long time and hermetically sealed.
The spray I've seen is Sani-spray; the directions on the bottle say to spray
the reed or mouthpiece, then wait 20 minutes. It seems to me the effect
would be to help the object dry out faster. When something air dries, the
germs die, which is why it's better to let your dishes air dry rather wipe
them with a towel.
I'd also vote for citrus Listerine, vodka likely being prohibited on school
grounds...
