Several Dancers Core has initiated an artistic collaboration between its=20
dance company, CORE Performance Company, and the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra=20=
to=20
present Georg Friedrich H=C3=A4ndel=E2=80=99s "Messiah" on Saturday, April=20=
1, 2006 at 8:00=20
p.m. at the Rialto Center for the Performing Arts. The contemporary dancer=
s=20
and Baroque musicians together have embraced the score of H=C3=A4ndel=E2=
=80=99s master work=20
to create an intimate and passionate performance. The melding of=20
contemporary dance and Baroque music will result in a reflective work parti=
cularly=20
appropriate for the Easter season. This performance will be the closing sh=
ow in=20
the first season of =E2=80=9CWoodruff Dance at the Rialto=E2=80=9D series w=
hich is a=20
collaboration among Woodruff Arts Center, The Rialto Center and Several Dan=
cers Core.
Sue Schroeder, Artistic Director of CORE Performance Company, describes her=
=20
choreographic work on "Messiah" as... =E2=80=9Can illuminated manuscript, w=
here the=20
dance adds color, movement and meaning to an already rich text and score.=

Schroeder=E2=80=99s "Messiah" originally premiered with taped music in 2001=
as part of=20
Several Dancers Core=E2=80=99s 20th Anniversary Season. The work has been=20=
updated=20
and expanded incorporating more of H=C3=A4ndel=E2=80=99s score and integrat=
ing musicians and=20
singers into the stage performance. Canadian-born Antoine Plante, Artistic=
=20
Director of Houston=E2=80=99s early music ensemble, Mercury Baroque, will be=
=20
conducting the musicians of the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra and a chorus in t=
he=20
performance at the Rialto.
Much controversy at the time of H=C3=A4ndel=E2=80=99s premiere of the "Mess=
iah" revolved=20
around its sacred text being performed in a theatrical setting. Schroeder=
=E2=80=99s=20
adaptation of the sacred work for dance, particularly contemporary dance, i=
s=20
equally innovative and provocative. The combination of an intimate,=20
authentic period performance with the unorthodox movement approach of conte=
mporary=20
dance challenges the conventions of performance of this musical masterpiece=
. =20
CORE, under the artistic direction of Sue Schroeder and the Atlanta Baroque=
=20
Orchestra have collaborated to re-envision this classic work with contempor=
ary=20
sophistication. The vocal soloists for "Messiah" will be: Ana=20
Trevino-Godfrey, soprano; Gerrod Pagenkopf, countertenor; Joseph Gaines, te=
nor; and Sam=20
Handley, bass.
Tickets are $16, $26 or $42 and may be purchased through the Rialto Box=20
Office. For more ticket information for "Messiah," please contact the Rial=
to=20
Center Ticket Office at (404) 651-4727 or visit www.rialtocenter.org.
Please join us for this emotional celebration if you are in the neighborhoo=
d!
