on this topic......... I just relistened after many year to H's recording
of the Mozart C Major concerto. My quarrel with his playing is not his
tone nor his virtuosity. It what he does with his tone........ he has a
habit of swelling on individual notes which for me destroys the musical
line. Also his vibrato is one dimensional,(almost always one speed) and
often a bit unfocused.
I remember many years ago hearing Tys play a Mozart violin sonata at an
IDRS conference.. He also produces what one may consider is a "thin"
tone..... no matter. His musicality (phrasing, etc) was astonishing and
that is what matters.
