I remember this story from the season I spent in the Oklahoma City
Orchestra when Norman Paulu was concertmaster and his wife Cathy Dufford
Paulu was the first oboe. The Paulus were gracious entertainers and a
few years before I was there, Sir John Barbarolli came to guest conduct
and his wife, Evelyn Rothwell came along. The Paulus hosted the
Barbarollis at dinner. In the course of the evening, as oboists are
wont to do, the attention turned towards reeds. Norman turned on his
tape recorder and one can hear Cathy and Lady B. discussing reeds, tone
etc. and at one point they exchanged reeds! There are a few minutes
when the sounds one heard are not identifiable. . .then Cathy, playing
on Lady B's reed sounded just like Eastman trained Cathy and Lady B,
playing on Cathy's reed, sounded just like Lady B.!! Go figure!
I'm still convinced that while the style of the reed facilitates the
ability to achieve the sound one desires, the CONCEPT of the sound has
to be in the ear and brain!
