annual Butler University Bassoon Day. The guests this year will be =20

Butler University Bassoon Day is open to bassoonists of =20
all ages and levels as well as their parents, teachers, and friends. =20=

This year's bassoon day will feature Yamaha Performing Artist Dr. =20
Michael Burns, associate professor at University of North Carolina =96 =20=

Greensboro, who will present a masterclass on orchestral excerpts and =20=

solo literature. Bassoonist and performing arts medicine expert Dr. =20
William Dawson will present a session on =93the Healthy Bassoonist=94 =
and =20
on =93Bassoon Basics=94. There will be a display of Yamaha bassoons and =
=20
accessories for you to try, and the day will include performances by =20
Drs. Burns, Dawson, and Spaniol, and the Butler Bassoon Ensemble. As =20=

always, a highlight of the day will be the final concert with the =20
Butler Bassoon Day Band in which all bassoonists attending can play.

Butler University=92s Bassoon Day is free of charge. =20
Please bring your bassoon, reeds, and accessories along with you.

Michael Burns is Associate Professor of bassoon at the =20
University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and is a Yamaha =20
Performing Artist. He holds the B.M. degree from the Victoria =20
University of Wellington, New Zealand, the M.M. from the New England =20
Conservatory, and the D.M.A. from the University of Cincinnati =20
College-Conservatory of Music. Burns has performed in numerous =20
professional orchestras including the Cincinnati and the New Zealand =20
Symphony Orchestras and played Principal in the Midland/Odessa, =20
Richmond and Abilene Symphonies, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, =20
and the Opera Company of North Carolina and North Carolina Ballet. =20
Currently he is also in demand as a performer with the North =20
Carolina, Charleston, Greensboro, and Charlotte Symphony Orchestras. =20
He is bassoonist in the Eastwind Ensemble and the Cascade Quintet. =20
Burns has taught at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory, Indiana =20
State University, and Midland College. In addition he remains active =20
as a solo and chamber performer with numerous performances at =20
International Double Reed Society conventions, recitals and =20
masterclasses throughout North America and the South Pacific. He has =20
recorded for the Centaur, CAP, Telarc, EMI, Klavier, and Mark labels. =20=

In summers, Burns is associated with the Eastern Music Festival and =20
the Bands of America Summer Symposium. He is also an active composer =20
with many of his pieces being published by BOCAL Music and frequently =20=

performed throughout the country. Burns has published articles and =20
reviews in the Double Reed (the journal of the International Double =20
Reed Society), the TBA Journal (Texas Bandmasters=92 Association), the =20=

NC Music Educator for which he serves as Woodwind Notes Editor, Notes =20=

(the journal of the Music Library Association) and on the Yamaha =20
Educator Series online <http://www.giles.com/educatorforum/PDFs/bno/=20
Wind/tips/Burns.pdf>. His mentors include William Winstead, Sherman =20
Walt, Leonard Sharrow, and Colin Hemmingsen. He is archivist for the =20
International Double Reed Society and was co-host for the IDRS 2003 =20
Conference in Greensboro, NC.

Dr. Bill Dawson is the medical consultant to the IDRS and the =20=

Association of Concert Bands. A board-certified orthopaedic surgeon =20
now retired from private practice, he is Associate Professor Emeritus =20=

of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine, =20
Northwestern University. Bill is President of the Performing Arts =20
Medicine Association and has authored more than 125 scientific =20
articles, textbook chapters, and abstracts about musicians' problems. =20=

He has presented numerous lectures, seminars and clinics on =20
performing arts medicine topics in the US, Europe, Australia, and =20
Asia. Bill currently is principal bassoonist of the Northwest =20
Symphony Orchestra and the Emeritus Orchestra of the Music Institute =20
of Chicago. He teaches bassoon privately at Glenbrook High Schools in =20=

Northbrook and Glenview, IL and freelances on bassoon and =20
contrabassoon in the Chicago area. His bassoon teachers have included =20=

Samuel Jordan and Willard Elliot.

Doug Spaniol is Associate Professor of Music at Butler =
University=92s =20
Jordan College of Fine Arts where he teaches bassoon and courses in =20
music theory. In the summers he serves as Instructor of Bassoon at =20
Interlochen Arts Camp. He has presented masterclasses at the St. =20
Petersburg Conservatory, Michigan State University, and for the Bands =20=

of America National Concert Band Festival. Dr. Spaniol has performed =20
as concerto soloist with Sinfonia da Camera, St. Petersburg Classical =20=

Symphony Orchestra, Solisti St. Petersburg, Central Ohio Symphony =20
Orchestra, and the Indianapolis Philharmonic. He appears as soloist =20
on two CD's: Bassoon with a View (Innova) and Frank Felice: Sidewalk =20
Music (Capstone). As principal bassoonist of Sinfonia da Camera, Dr. =20
Spaniol has toured England, been heard on NPR's Performance Today, =20
and appears on CDs on Redcliffe and Zephyr records and the Classical =20
Music for Dummies CD. He frequently appears as a performer/presenter =20=

at conferences of the International Double Reed Society, and he =20
serves as the Bassoon Chair for the IDRS=92 Fernand Gillet =96 Hugo Fox =20=

Competition. His bassoon teachers include William Waterhouse, =20
Christopher Weait, and E. Sanford Berry. A Yamaha Artist/Clinician, =20
Dr. Spaniol plays a Yamaha YFG-811 bassoon.

If you wish to perform in Dr. Burns=92 bassoon masterclass, please =20
indicate so on the Registration Form. Those wishing to perform should =20=

prepare a standard orchestral excerpt or movement from a standard =20
solo work. Performers will be selected on a first come-first served =20
basis and will be notified well in advance.

=95 Music, maps, and additional information will be mailed about one =20=

week in advance.

=95 To ensure that music and other material is available, everyone is =20=

strongly encouraged to register by January 9, 2005. However, late and =20=

on-site registration may be possible if numbers permit.
