I travel a lot with my bassoon on the airlines. Your instrument you should
definitely take on board as carry-on. They will x-ray it and probably ask
to open it, politely ask them to take care. As far as your tools go, you
will need to check them in your baggage, they will not let anything that
remotely resembles a knife, a needle file(mandrel) or screwdriver on board.
A friend of mine who plays the oboe indicated that at one time they
considered oboe reeds "bullets" due to the metal in the staple, but I do not
know anymore. They will probably let the little screw-driver in your case
pass. I would not carry your best tools. I have an alternate set that I
travel with, just in case my luggage gets lost. TSA usually opens my
suitcase when it goes through their big x-ray machine, due to the fact that
they see all the metal equipment in there, knives, stands, tools, etc, once
they called me back to ask what was going on, but everything has always
passed through somehow, either as carry on or checked baggage.
