One of my first MUTS had an overlay that pushed over the thumbrest and
had the rod coming down from the overlay. No side to side wobble, but
not balanced for the held high oboe. Still, I wanted this to be balanced
so I could push up my glasses or turn the page and still play the left
hand notes and open C#. Thus the "balanced oboe" is an important
feature and requires the support rod to come off a fulcrum about next to
the side F tonehole. The hinge plate stays on the oboe; I made it only
about 1/8" thick not to interfere with the joint fitting in the case.
The plate stays on semipermanently via a doublestick tape; Command is
the best for both its holding power and ease of removal, as it stretches
out from under the plate when pulled.
I cut the rod to not extend below the middle joint, so it can be cased
with the rod in place on the hinge. Clarinetists use MUTS also- just
have to make it shorter. Neck strays work better for clarinets since
they are held much more vertically than an oboe.

Is this detachable so the middle joint fits in the oboe case? This is
what I like about my MUTS. I designed a special clip that detaches
instantly with a flick of the thumb; it stores easily in the pocket of
my outer case. The original design has a plate that is taped to the
oboe, requiring a spoke be placed and replaced when it is detached from
the support pole. However, it allowes for better positioning of the
angle of the oboe; the clarinet is held closer.
