Thank you for your responses. Jim Jeter responded privately due to a
technical problem, so I will post his response below for those interested.

Dear David,
Unfortunately, my browser for responding to the doublereed list is down, so
can't get this message to the list, but wanted to respond to your query
about Persichetti's Parable.
I personally coached with Persichetti at Juilliard on this piece. Vincent
told me that his whole concept of the Parable was his thinking of a lone
bassoonist, just improvising in a picturesque field - out in the country.
He strongly emphasized really exaggerating all accents - make it really
"jazzy," to quote Persichetti. He basically wants an improvisatory air to
the whole thing - take as much exaggerated rubato as you'd like. The
metronome markings are just an indication of changes in tempi - not set in
stone, do what's comfortable.
Hope this helps - all the best, Jim
P.S. If you feel like posting these comments to the doublereed, I won't mind
- I think Persichetti was pretty clear in his intentions for this little
work.

I did this piece on a recital in uni. and believe this is correct as well.
I don't recall more than one for any single instrument.
seems sort of along the same lines as Berio - Sequenzia??? (can't recall if
there is more than one for a particular instrument there but don't think
so).
Nice expressive piece - good choice.
Best wishes to all,
Isaac
