I wonder if he had been writing today, if he'd include the SF Bay Area
on his interesting food town list. I'm especially enjoying the Indian
influences here.

I'd like to recommend the following as a dish suitable before a
stressful event like a concert or audition. It's called "Kicheree" and
because it is highly digestable and nutritious, it is commonly fed to
infants and to people who are ill or convalescing. It is remarkable how
"lightly" it rests in the stomach. I've never felt at all sluggish or
sleepy after eating it. This was confirmed last Friday when I only had
a half hour before performing a woodwind quintet concert to eat at the
hall itself. and risked downing a bowl full with a small breakfast
sausage to add flavor. I was able to stay alert and energized for the
whole concert (even panic-stricken at certain points, but that wasn't
due to the food).

The dish combines rice and mung or mansoor dal (kind of like lentils)
in a sort of risotta, flavored with cumin and turmeric. The legume &
grain combo is a great source of protein. There are lots of variant
recipes, but I'd be happy to send anyone who requests it my method,
which includes an onion, plenty of garlic and some cayenne pepper to
add more flavor.

"In America, I would say New York and New Orleans are the two most
interesting food towns. In New Orleans, they don't have a bad deli.
There's no
mediocrity accepted."
