For those who haven't seen these scams before, here is the drill:
Somebody contacts you about getting (oboe, piano, reed-making, etc.) lessons
for their child, who, conveniently, is going to be staying with a friend or
relative in your city soon.
Typically, the "father" asks for a lesson schedule that is beyond intensive
-- such as 4X a week for several months -- and says he will pay in full, in
advance.
If you accept his terms, a check will arrive for a great deal more than the
amount agreed upon. There is always some reason why the guy needs "change"
for his check -- like he says he needs to convert it into American dollars, or
some such, or it's the only check he has, or whatever. (All bogus.)
He asks you to deposit the check and return the overage to him via Western
Union, or he will have someone (usually his "business partner") come by and
pick up the balance for him.
But when you deposit his check, it bounces -- after a few days in the
system. If you have already wired him the money, you are OUT all the money that you
wired to him or spent based on his bogus check.
This is indeed a scam, just like all the Nigerian or whatever inheritance
letters that hit most of our mailboxes regularly.
If it looks dicey, it is dicey. Caveat vendor.
