UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS
DOUBLE - REED WEEKEND
with
JAZZ BASSOONIST PAUL HANSON
AND OBOIST ALLAN VOGEL
The weekend of November 12 - 14 will feature musical events never seen in the
history of the University of Arkansas. International double reed stars, Paul
Hanson and Allan Vogel will present a variety of activities for all oboists,
bassoonists, and jazz and classical-music lovers at the University of
Arkansas.
Paul Hanson performs on the bassoon, the lowest member of the woodwind section
in an orchestra. Paul takes the instrument into a realm not often heard by
audiences--a realm of jazz improvisation and amplification of the instrument’s
sound. He is an international star, having performed and recorded with Bela
Fleck and the Flecktones, Wayne Shorter, Peter Erskine, Jeff Sipe, Ray
Charles, Terry Riley, Darol Anger, and Dave Binney. He has also appeared as
soloist with several U.S. orchestras. Paul is a past winner of JAZZIZ
Magazine’s “Woodwinds on Fire” competition, the first-ever bassoon winner. He
has released five solo albums and regularly conducts teaching seminars in jazz
improvisation and electronic amplification and manipulation of sound at
schools and universities across the U.S.
If you’ve ever wondered what a bassoon sounds like, if you don’t believe that
a bassoon can play jazz, or just want to hear a fantastic jazz concert, these
are the events to attend! Paul is known for presenting concerts that
captivate the audience and leaves them wondering “How’d he do that??
