Could it be argued that 2,300 people listening to a Beethoven 9
performance in a live setting with a great orchestra in a perfect
acoustic is a less important/impactful/valuable/meaningful experience
than 1,000,000 listening to Beethoven 9 on a replay system of any
kind regardless of its fidelity? While most concert attendees will
have a more rewarding individual experience than the 1,000,000
replayers, the latter group by its very size creates a great impact
that could be closest to meeting the intent of the composer.
Probably any member of this list listening to a Toscanini recording
of the 9th on an fm radio would garner more from a single hearing
than the investment banker there for show in a $500 gala box seat in
Orchestra Hall. Given the variability of the comprehension of
individual audience members, acoustic is the least of the issues.
If it's alle Menschen nich jedes menschlich who are supposed to
become bruder, wouldn't more be merrier, damn the fidelity? :-)
