This makes me think of the stories people tell me, such as after a concert
the person has attended comments favorably to the performer (who may be a
peer), and the performer responds not with "Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it",
but with, "Oh, I could've done better. I really blew it on the allegro and
my tone wasn't really what it should be ... etc."

I try to teach my students to be gracious, even though they personally
thought they could've done better. Otherwise, you are saying that the
audience member's comments mean nothing and they may not come back if all
they are going to hear afterward are your complaints.

This quote is also relevent to the idea has critcized before on another
list (advocating the Separation of School and State, i.e. getting the govt.
out of controlling the education system) that false self-esteem is
inherently NOT what children need to be achievers (in whatever they choose
to ultimately do). Real achievement means you will fail many times, but we
learn from our mistakes. If you get bucked off the horse, you just gotta get
back on and ride, otherwise you will be afraid of riding your whole life.
(Actually, I'm trying to help a friend with that.)
