Joel,
Can you hold it well enough without the mandrel?
I seem to recall that Jennifer Paull (http://www.amoris.com/) says she
doesn't use one in reedmaking.
I find it gives me something more to hold on to, but other than that, may
not be necessary. I've had more problems with the tube slipping off!
