Those tools should be covered under homeowners insurance. If you
transport them to and from school, they will be covered if they
were stolen from your car. The problem is, if they were stolen
out of your car, they may not be valuable enough to make it worth
making a claim so that you would be paying for them out of pocket
even though they are covered since most of us have a $1000 to
$1500 deductible. That is why it might make sense to have a rider
that specifically covers your tools. Also, in the past in the
state where I am, they just wrote you a check for the full value
you payed for the stolen items. Now they pay you half the value,
you then buy the new items and submit the receipt in order to get
reimbursed for the remaining money owed to you. I think that
stinks and makes for another good reason to check on a rider or
individual policy.
