The poster we put out emphasized the "no questions asked" and
"reward"...which by the way was $50. It took about 10 days to get my
bassoon back.
Interestingly, the posters were only torn down in one place...the exact
spot on the street the bassoon was taken from.
I also checked in person with several pawn shops and a local music store
that buys and sells used instruments.
Apparently, pawn shops in SF must declare serial numbers on all
instruments brought in to the police to check for them being stolen. So
perhaps that is one reason it is hard to unload a bassoon in SF. The
music store made no claims about police checks, but they also seemed a
lot more genuinely concerned about a stolen bassoon.
I count myself very lucky for getting my bassoon and gig bag back, and a
lot wiser now...at least about watching out for my bassoon.
