I agree! Definitely convinced by what I heard... Coupled with hearing =
Vienna
and LSO in Singapore.. I'm head over heels! :D I think recordings cannot
genuinely offer you the range and depth of sound and COLORS that can be
heard during a live performance. Being a poor bassoonist who cannot =
afford
state of the art sound systems and good earphones (for a normal CD =
player),
I just cannot hear that richness that can be heard in live performances =
:)

Unfortunately, they did not perform in the Victoria Concert Hall (that's =
the
original and PIONEER concert hall that we have). Thank goodness they
didn't!! I reckon the stage would not be able to accommodate the =
orchestra
size for Mahler, AND I would not have been able to get a ticket! I was =
able
to get good seats, but only because I bought the tickets 6 months before =
the
concert!=20

The orchestra performed at the Esplanade Concert Hall. It's a new
performance area that we have, that can seat easily 1500 audience, with
state of the art (not too sure, but the sound panels look impressive!)
acoustics and facilities! www.esplanade.com.sg

Lang Lang's performance was a sold out, but the second performance (with =
the
Mozart and Mahler), had a few empty seats in the audience. Such a =
waste!!=20

:D

Yes, George, it must've been "kingwood' - it was noisy backstage and i=20
declined going out for drinks on the grounds of needing to study=20
criminal law from 5.30 am :-( , so i think that must've been what he=20
actually said.

Esther, i'm so glad you wrote this post.
Live music is so much better, so much more exciting, absorbing, than=20
CD's, but in this electronic day and age it's so easy not to bestir=20
onesself to go hear a concert....

in Singapore, did they play in that old beautiful hall where the=20
Singapore Symphony used to play [i heard a concert there in 1993]?

Not unsurprisingly, the concert with Lang Lang sold out here within=20
about 24 hours of the tickets going onsale.... i got among the last 3=20
seats together - behind the orchestra - about 4 days after they went=20
onsale.....
