Hi...
They were recently in Singapore for our own local Arts Festival, and did =
2
night's worth of program...=20
Night 1
Dvorak's Carnival Concert Overture
Tchaikovsky's Piano Concert No 1, (Piano solo - Lang Lang)
Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra
Night 2
Mozart's Oboe Concerto (Richard Woodhams)
Mahler's Symphony No 5
Both soloists were FANTASTIC. I loved Mr Woodhams' rich oboe sound.. He
seemed to float over all his notes! Lang Lang was great as well, and =
I've
seldom seen a piano soloist treat his notes with such care! The woodwind
principals were fantastic, the ensemble playing was tight.
Mahler for us was great as well, with some hiccups here and there. The
trumpet solo was just right, the strings (in their solo movement) were
fantastic! Kudos goes for the all the soloists! (I'm actually not a huge =
fan
of Mahler.. The very first time I listened to a recording of his =
Symphony 5,
I nearly wanted to bash my head against the wall (no insult to the
composer!), but after listening to their Philadelphia Orchestra's
performance of the work, I'm convinced!
After listening to their performance, it just further enhances my belief
that nothing beats listening to a 'live' performance compared to a CD!=20
(apologies if I sound like I'm gushing and make no sense, but it is =
truly
inspiring! For an amateur bassoonist with a downward spiraling =
confidence
level, their performance reminds me of the 101 reasons why I love music =
and
the passion of sharing it)

hi all,
so last night a packed hall in hong kong heard dick woodhams play the=20
mozart concerto.
even from my seat behind the orchestra, he sounded fabulous. and he's=20
using a "red-wood" yamaha oboe. really beautiful, colorful,=20
expressive, gorgeous playing.
i asked him afterwards about the oboe and he called it "canewood" [??]=20
- dunno what this is but it's certainly worth a surf or two to=20
discover.
just hope my student was appropriately inspired.
eschenbach, conducting mahler 1 on the 2nd half, was, however, ghastly.
cheers all,
rhondda may
