Talking in a group of my middle-aged peers who all work
full-time, we soon discovered that each person was seriously doing
something that the rest of us envied but never seemed to make time
for: running 5 miles every morning, spending two hours a day making
meals from scratch, reading through the Great Books, and practicing
an instrument. Each person asked the others with astonishment, "How
do you find the time for that?" Every answer was, "It's my top
priority." All of us shape our schedules around that priority and fit
in everything else afterwards. Instead of considering it a burden, we
all feel sad and deprived if we ever have to skip it. I'm too old to
learn an instrument by dabbling, and the ambition to improve
overwhelms any little second thoughts that whisper, "Wash off the
stove! Read that book which everyone is talking about! Working
overtime and finish that project!"
