Subj: [DR-L] More discipline, less bondage!!

Janie - just wanted to add my 2 cents to the good advice you've already
received on the list. I learned a long time ago that there's no
discipline without DESIRE. Ask yourself - why am I not motivated to
practice today? But putting this psychological question aside (may not
be able to answer it, anyway!), I've never done ANYTHING by just
thinking/analysing too much. Just have to take an _action_, and the mind
"follows" - for me, this means I sometimes make myself practice for ONLY
30 minutes a day. Now, this usually turns into 2+ hours, but as others
have suggested, the hard part is just sitting down with the instrument.
Once I have instrument in hand, the desire to play well takes over. But
limiting oneself to only 30 minutes is do-able for anyone. And
psychologically, it takes off a bit of pressure (guess living with a
bona fide PH.D psychoanalyst has taken its toll on me!). If one has
time, it's also healthy to break up practice time - perhaps time in the
a.m. and later in the day. Good luck - breakka reed! Jim
