Hi,

The following is a suggestion. It is open to flaming, so flame on if you
like :)

Try using enjoyment as an antidespressant, and push harsh discipline to the
sidelines for just a little while.

Pick a piece that you know well and love. Play long tones to concentrate on
your sound and relax. Now play the piece you selected. Play as though no
one is listening--this is for you. The rusty edges will emerge; fix them,
etc. Discipline sneaks in as a part of the cycle, and then it doesn't seem
like work. Hopefully, at this point you will, "want to play," not just
"have to play."

I also run, and runners say that the longest distance is from the sofa to
the front door, but this is another story.

Please take all of this as an encouragement. Yes, I have a day job, but
there are times I can hardly wait to take my oboe out of its case and play.
(Sometimes I can hardly wait to run, strange as that may seem). I'm
fortunate to have quite a few opportunities to play for others, but playing
is something I do for myself then I share. Relax and enjoy!

Margaret Kenney
