To Janie (et al) Disipline and practice. I think that it is based largely on
your own motivation to SUCCEED. I can give wonderful examples of 2
successful newbies whose pracice routines got them excellent positions in
fine orchestras. One studied with me (bassoon) at the Montreal Conservatoire
de Musique a few years ago. He played his first exam with shaking knees in
his first semester with me. By the end of his study at the Conservatoire he
achieved Premier Prix avec unanimite
(First Prize with the unanimous approval of a very difficult jury), playing
in one recital the Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra of Andre Jolivet (to
perfection) and on his second recital the Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra
of Henri Tomasi. His method of practice consisted of working very late into
the nights in the studio, pracicing each page of a daunting work, and not
turning that page until he could play the page perfectly.
The other young musician did not study with me, but she similarly got up
every morning to practice her tone quality towards getting more beautiful
sounds and every possible practice technique to improve her ability to play
ALL of the music she ever tried. Even when one is on holiday, it is possible
to carry on this kind of dedicated practice. This student, studying for a
master's degree with a great teacher last year, won the First Prize at the
New York Flute Club competition for young flute soloists in North America.
Then she won a second flute position in a super orchestra over intense
competition. With examples like these, rare though they may seem, go the
best rewards in the art of music that I know. Good luck in gaining that kind
of motivation from within yourself, Ms. Janie. You will love music that much
more when you have achieved that goal. You won't need any anti-depressants
ever. Sincerely, Gerald Corey, Ottawa
