I have never played before buffaloes, but once on a tour to Gibraltar, I
played a piano trio in a church hall. Just before the start of the concert,
24 nuns marched in to reserved seats in the front two rows, folded their
arms in their habits and put on their inscrutable looks. We started playing.
No reaction at all, no sense of enjoyment. The three of us began
instinctively to wind up the speed in an attempt to generate some
excitement. Faster and faster. Then when a long piano interlude came up, I
realised "Jim can't play it at that speed". But he did. However, he had much
less time than normal for the page turn, took a fast swipe at the part but
instead of turning the page it flew on the floor. By that time the rest of
us were playing and couldn't help him. Not one nun moved to help. He steamed
on for quite a while from memory but in the end had to give up. We restarted
at a manageable speed and finished... but still did not crack the trace of a
smile from any of the nuns! They might as well have been buffaloes!
