I often make what I call "designer" reeds. They are wrapped in the normal
way with whatever color thread I'm using, then I add a 2nd wrap with a
contrasting color, making only a few turns around the reed so that the
first color is the background & the 2nd color a "design" -- kind of a candy
cane effect. My middle school female students love these!
