Phil,
Yes actually i was gonna recommend the soundtrack of the Last
temptation of christ. I have that and the Gladiator (big fan of
soundtracks) but I dont really remember the dudouk in the gladiator!!!
The first thing that comes to mind when I remember the music of the
soundtrack to the last temptation of christ is the Dudouk!! One of the
main reasons why that soundtrack was loved by many people here in the
middle east was the usage of such instrument as well as others to play
middle eastern melodies.
Listen to the first track of that soundtrack. Some of my friends cried
when they heard the dudouk. Anyways i know this is not what you are
looking for but I couldn't resist.
I did think about trying to play it but never tried or even looked to
see if i can find it here in Kuwait. But please do keep me posted if
you play it.
Hey have you heard the Arabic version of the flute, the Nay
(pronounced Ni as in Nile) now THAT is a difficult instrument to play
as there are no keys just holes and pretty much everything is done
with lips and wind. I bought one from Cairo where it is most famous
and it's not expensive at all...just a few dollars. Trying to get a
sound from that instrument is like trying to get a sound by blowing
over the opening of a bottle.
there is an incrediable short piece by one of the famous Nay players
here that I'm sure would be really nice to hear. But I dont know how I
can upload it into a computer....
anyways
my 2 cents
ciao
Sameer
