Michael is right, of course.

MUTS the way Michael makes it and the way I use it are a bit different.
Sorry for any confusion.

I can also detach the thumb plate (my design) at a moment's notice with a
flick of the thumb, but otherwise while playing, the spring holds the thumb
plate attachment to the rod support (so when I detach it and it falls
forward nothing falls off). When I stand up at the end for applause, I can
let the rod/thumb plate assembly fall forward, pull the entire part off the
velcro piece and set it on the stand, or just hold it in place. Very
convenient.

Without the spring on, the feel is a little different, but the thumb plate
would still stay on the oboe (if I don't flick it off), so this would be
more convenient for cuing; I've found I'm well able to lift enough without
having to do that. Lifting high enough would take the rod attachment off the
velcro pad piece, too.
