Subj: [DR-L] SURVEY: any interest in a beginning jazz improv workshop for double
Date: Mon, 7 Mar 2005 16:59:24 -0500

Dear Colleagues:

I am posting this query for bassoonist Paul Hanson. Both Paul and Mike
Rabinowitz have passed around an idea of starting a summer workshop for
double-reed players that would focus on how to get started with playing jazz
and with improvisation. If anyone has an opinion--either way--on this idea,
could you please respond to the following questions? Thanks!

Their idea is to have multiple days where double-reed players would gather and
spend up to a week on the practice of improvisation. Both Mike and Paul have
presented sessions at IDRS conferences on this subject but the short amount of
time that can be scheduled at such an event really doesn't allow time to show
the novice how much progress that can be made with beginning steps. Jazz
history and theory would also be covered, as well as the various miking
systems available and the electronic effects that are possible using stomp
boxes. I believe that if this workshop were to occur, there would be daily
sessions and time at night to visit various jazz clubs in the host city for
further education.

1. Do you or your students have an interest in this type of workshop?

2. Would you attend if it were 5 days (or even 7 days) long?

3. Do you consider the subject of improvisation to be intimidating (that is,
almost impossible to learn) as a classical player?

4. Do you have any other comments or suggestions on activities?

Thanks for responding!
