Dear Spedding,
I wonder why? Every question is worth asking, particularly
those with reference to performers and curiosity about them.
We can all learn from every inspiring performance.

So do I. Passing a comment does not exclude my interest in
other knowledge and comments.

That is, I believe, exactly what I was saying in a paraphrased
condensation.
Cathy Berberian's recording of the Beatles' Songs has recently
been re-released. She sings "Yesterday" as she put it - "like
Joan Baez, had she taken lessons from Elizabeth Schwartzkopf."
Superb Parody - once can identify all three, Berberian, Baez
and Schwartzkopf.
Could I play a piece with the tone of Pierre Pierlot had he
taken lessons with Heinz Holliger (I am aware of the generation
gap)?
Well, my answer is - I think it is better to be myself - no
way could I pull off that hat trick and be true to any given
element, but having heard a performance I admire, it will
inevitably affect my thoughts - thus, my interpretation.
That in no way implies I am disinterested in who composed, who
performed, whose vibrato and tone colour changed or why.
Can one ever know why?
At the end of the day, I will still sound like me even if I
modify X and Y for an audience who would not know my
reasons for so doing.
You may of course, feel totally differently, which is your right.
I do not presume to tell you otherwise. I just presume I
can make a comment.
