Subj: [DR-L] Marcello sonata
Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2005 04:48:59 -0500

Dear Heather,

in my edition (Willy Mueller, Heidelberg 1960) the first movement of
Marcello's sonata VI in G major is marked Adagio in common time,
so I understand that you refer to the sonata IV in g minor, that begins
with an adagio in 3/4. The most important hint to determine the speed
of this movement is the fact that the smallest notes (excepting the
ornamentations) are eight notes. Furthermore playing it as a slow six
would take away the energy of the first phrase (the first four bars) and
make the haemiolas difficult to perceive.

If I understood wrongly the sonata you referred to, accept my
apologies.

Andrea Toschi
