-An easier way to test adding to the thumbrest is by using Dr. Scholl's
adhesive foam/moleskin - cut 1/2" X 3/4" pieces and stick them together
in layers- like 3-4 layers- the last layer you press to your thumbrest.
Nice cushy feel.
I could probably pass as adhesives expert.....the best "removable"
adhesive
of the doublestick type is COMMAND by 3M. It's kept my MUTS hinge on the
oboe for 2 years now. Normally used with bath fixtures or wall posters,
it is available separately at Home Depot, Michael's Crafts, and the
Container Store. At the latter I found their 3M part #17200, assorted
size strips. Home Depot had the poster strips. Both sides have the same
adhesive. You can gang them up for a larger area. The pull tab allows
easy removal by thinning the material out from what it is joining. Most
any doublestick fastener would have trouble with "oily" shiny surfaces
such as milk bottle plastic or glue stick polymer, as well as friable
"dusty" surfaces like erasers. You'd have to test it on cork.
Another easy to use material is the hot melt glue stick-very easy to
trim after forming a button of it. I use it to adjust the travel on my
glasses arms, align material like fake leather before I sew it, quick
padding for noisy oboe keys that have lost a cork sliver, and in an
emergency, even as a meltable material between a pad and its key (A
Technician would flinch, as any flexible when dry materal would allow a
cork pad to shift slightly). I'm very adept at using a stick with a
cig. lighter to melt the end and use it to pad any sharp surface or
insulate wiring connections. Silicone calk is good as a glue but takes
time to set. Superglue is brittle (the gel type is better) but WILL
separate if heated.
Then there is adhesive velcro- I put a piece on the back of my tuner,
and have another piece hanging from under the music stand- so mine is
right where the oboe can point to it. I've had poor luck with
interlocking buttons "velcro"- don't buy the Command version. Usually
the force can pull the adhesive off the substrate.
