I don't know; I am getting some mixed messages here. But, anyway, I
found out 20 years ago that the thumb rest needs to be HIGHER on the
oboe. I made myself, when I had access to the tools, a thumb rest that
put my thumb higher up, and adds to the thickness of the instrument.
Agreed, it puts your thumb slightly above the balance point, but you
get used to this very quickly.
Just to check; put your right thumb (in mid-air - without an
instrument) opposite the middle finger, at the distance it would be if
you would hold an oboe. Now put your thumb opposite your index finger,
at a slightly increased distance - much more relaxed, and much more
flexibility for your RH fingers; in my opinion.
