colleagues:

just wanted to share with you all a discovery i made last night.

in the past, i have fashioned simple thumbrest-extensions out of cork
for students who needed their right thumb to be lower on the oboe than
permitted by the set thumbrest. it's better than asking a young player
to shell out lots of $$ for a proper adjustable screw-in one.

last night i was practicing the oboe d'amore aria in js bach's
magnificat, which i'm performing in 2 weeks. several years ago i had
made myself a rather more "deluxe" extension (wrapped in chamois, ahh,
such luxury!), but over the years and house-moves since i last played
my d'amore it had disappeared. as i cast my eyes over my reed desk for
something to use, i noticed a plastic eraser that my kids had left
lying around. EUREKA! this is the perfect stuff to carve a thumbrest
extension from - it's a good thickness to start with, and responds
easily to an xacto knife. it's softer and just slightly squshy, thus
easier on the thumb.

i haven't figured out yet how to attach it to the existing thumbrest,
but since i'm only playing this one aria and subsequent chorus, i may
not have to.

who'd'a thunk it??

cheers,
rhondda
