GLICKMAN-POPKIN BASSOON CAMP - 27th YEAR!

10 Days at Wildacres Retreat, Little Switzerland, North Carolina
Monday, May 23 to Thursday, June 2, 2004
www.bassooncamp.com

Dear Bassoon Camper:

Thank you for your interest in attending our twenty-seventh annual bassoon camp. Loren and I are very impressed with past campers'
devotion and new campers' enthusiasm for our and our guest artists' and staff's offerings. Our daily schedule is the result of many
years' experience and campers' suggestions and will, we hope, provide sufficient time for practice, relaxation and sightseeing.
Recent additions are daily classes in Bassoon Basics and Reed Making,, as well as Bassoon Ensembles, and Master Classes dealing
with all difficulty levels, in response to campers' requests.
We hope that your experience at GPBC sill be both informative and FUN.

In addition to daily Master Classes, features of our program include free repairs by the world's foremost restorative artist, Jim
Laslie, and his colleague Paul Nordby. Please note that free repairs are offered only to full-time participants. Additionally,
Nancy Johnston will return as our accompanist in residence. Gail Warnaar and Justin Miller will preside over voluminous music and
supply stores, respectively. Should you need to order music and/or supplies in advance, please contact Gail at The Double Reed
Shop, P.O. Box 150, Barnet, VT 05821, (802) 633-4016, (Gail@-----. Box 822, Wayne, PA 19087,
610/278-5017/5029 Fax, 800/323-3216, miller445@-----.

We are most fortunate to have three world-famous guest artists in attendance: Steve Dibner, assoc. prin. San Francisco Symphony,
Barrick Stees, assoc. prin. Cleveland Orchestra and Richard Svoboda, prin. Boston Symphony Orchestra. Alan Fox will return to offer
his latest bassoon designs and innovations. Former camper and NCSA graduate Maria Narf Spuller, now a qualified Holistic Health
Practitioner and Oriental Bodywork Masseuse, will be available again (for a nominal fee) to wield her magic on your flaccid frame.

Appointments with Jim, Paul, Nancy and Maria can be scheduled when you check in during the afternoon of Monday, May 23, 2005. Room
assignments will be posted near the registration desk. All rooms are semi-private with private bath. Rooms will be available at
3:00 P.M.

The first day's schedule will begin with dinner at 6:00 P.M. and Loren's first Master Class will start at 7:30 P.M. His lecture
will be preceded by introductory remarks either by Philip Blumenthal, Director of the Blumenthal Foundation, which maintains this
magnificent facility, or by Mike House, the Resident Manager of the Wildacres Retreat. The class will be followed by our customary
opening reception in the snack bar. We will also have a closing party after the evening lecture, Wednesday, June 1st. Bassoon camp
will end following breakfast, June 2nd.

We will have a day off mid-session, to facilitate sightseeing, rest and relaxation. Box lunches will be provided in addition to our
usual breakfast and dinner service. The evening lecture will feature Jim Laslie and Paul Nordby, which should provide you with more
information than you would ever want to know concerning bassoon maintenance and construction.

Refer to the Wildacres brochure enclosed for driving directions. If you plan to fly, please ARRIVE at the Asheville, NC airport
BEFORE 4:00 P.M., May 23rd and DO NOT DEPART FROM THE ASHEVILLE AIRPORT BEFORE NOON, June 2nd. Contact me BEFORE making
reservations. This schedule will get you to camp in time for dinner (5/23) and back to the airport after breakfast (6/2). We will
arrange for your transportation to and from camp either by car pool or by van for a modest charge. The photo opposite the
'Accommodation' section of the brochure is of the North Lodge where you will register.

Your contribution to the Margaret Comstock, Doris Glickman, Georgia Spratt, and Elsie Dinsmore Popkin Memorial Scholarship Fund
would be greatly appreciated. It is a growing fund that will establish an endowment to our camp, with many students benefiting.
Please make your tax deductible check payable to the 'Wildacres Retreat'.

There are a few rules that we request you to observe, namely:
Our fee of $600.00 is all-inclusive. Please do not importune our guest artists
for cigarette butts.
No practicing or playing after midnight.
No pets allowed.
No camping on the grounds.
No portable radios or TV's. It's amazing how easily one can do without these.
Local daily newspapers are available in the North Lodge Lounge.
Our fee of $600.00 is all-inclusive. Please do not importune our guest artists
for lessons with remuneration. I am sure that they, and we, will be happy

Performance of this rather voluminous repertoire will be on a voluntary basis during the various Master Classes.

WHAT TO BRING
The climate is quite temperate this time of year with a temperature range of about 50 to 75 degrees F. Dress is strictly casual
with jeans, summer shirts, a light jacket and, of course, our complimentary camp T-shirt. Hiking shoes, bathing attire, and tennis
rackets can be put to full use in nearby facilities. There are many fascinating tours recommended, including Penland
(internationally famous crafts school), Biltmore House in Asheville, emerald mines, and local crafts people galore. While beverages
of all types are available off the mountain, you might wish to bring your favorites. Bring your reed making tools and a music stand.

Loren and I wish you a safe and pleasant trip and look forward to seeing you atop our mountain.
