Subj: [DR-L] Why do musicians hate themselves?
Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2005 03:02:00 -0500

Do they though? Is it just musicians? We do have a analytical ear
when listening to music, and can be just as damning on performances
that leave us cold, as our own.

I guess I was very lucky - my teachers were generally very
supportive, and the teacher I had that was closest to God, Jiri
Tancibudek, used to say "Might I suggest" - He would never tell
a student that they were "wrong" - even if he did not like the
musicality of a phrase. A teacher must strive to encourage the student
to produce the best they can, and to play musically ind
intelligently. There is little room for ego as a student. I think
part of the problem is that many teachers have not achieved what they
would have liked to in their own playing, can be negative, and this
rubs off.

Just my 2 cents worth
