When I was more steadily employed, the $40 annual was not a problem. After
the tech bust, with part-timing and going month to month, sacrificing to create
time for practicing and composing, I just can't rationalize any memberships to
ANY of the organizations I was previously in. It seems wrong to continue with
such luxuries when going on occasional bouts of unemployment. (I am also a
bit miffed about having to cover full IDRS membership and admission costs for a
couple of the musicians I brought in to perform "The Golem" at the convention.
It was a very expensive performance for me because of that, at a time when I
just been layed off.)

It IS a great way to stay in touch with folks, and they have even reviewed a
couple of my DRQ arrangements and published an article I wrote. So I do have
some positive thoughts about the organization. But I have some criticisms, too,
especially getting incensed when I heard one of the editors say at a
convention board meeting that when asked by folks when their stuff would be published,
he would just lie and say next issue. Admitted it in public using those very
words and there was no censure of any sort that I was aware of. I had egg on
my face a couple times when I was falsely told something was going to be in the
next issue and passed that info on to retailers I was trying to market to.
I'd much preferred being given an honest, realistic estimate.

I sympathize with Mike Benthin's case, too. There were many cases where I
wanted to announce something and was politely told it was not "appropriate" for
the list or the journal. Unlike any other professional journal in the world
that I know of where new products and services are considered industry news. Very
frustrating.

I hope readers will forgive me for venting. My financial difficulties are my
own responsibility, largely resulting from my own choices. The IDRS is a
worthwhile organization and worth joining. But if you do, I hope you contine to
also subscribe to this list.

It is indeed a great resource, and a fine way to keep in touch with friends
and colleagues with whom you might otherwise lose contact. Just the
publications are worth the paltry fee associated with membership.
