Doublereed Archive - Posting 000017.txt from 2005/01
From: benthin@-----.net Subj: [DR-L] Re: past times of this list Date: Fri, 7 Jan 2005 10:04:24 -0500
In the beginnings of the internet, I remember posting to and reading
"bulletin boards" on Prodigy such as Classical Music or Auto Repair. I
bought a nice $1000 GG Loree oboe through such an early "list".
In the past players from major orchestras posted to this list weekly,
(Alex Klein and David Weiss, ie.) as well as notable technicians like
the Keymaker from Laubin. I posted the design of MUTS oboe support to
this list back around 96, and was invited by my first notable customer,
Bob Hubbard of Westwind Machining to sit in at his booth/table at the 97
Chicago IDRS convention to show the MUTS. I suspect that the the bloom
of communication that the internet provides has faded since the
beginning of this list, and we forget that since then over two 4yr
generations of high school/college students have passed through.
I do see far fewer questions from students these days, likely due to
the ease of Googling the sources of info on most questions even as
arcane as doublereed ones. I hope it's not due to the elders being too
busy or distracted to monitor the list today, assuming nothing
worthwhile is asked.
