I, too, was taught to avoid the clarinet thumb technique. My first oboe
teacher specifically taught students to rest the left thumb on the wood
just below the octave key, as Rhondda suggested. I was taught that the
left hand should not attempt to take any part of the weight of the oboe --
that is strictly the job of the right thumb.
